Themes: God is your rock and fortress, and He delivers those in whom He delights.

Focus Question: Does God delight in you?

Introduction: Psalm 18 is one of the great victory songs in Scripture. David is reflecting on God’s deliverance from King Saul and the enemies who tried to destroy him. This Psalm is like a battlefield testimony wrapped in worship. Psalm 18:1-19.

Sermon Points:

1. God is personal. David says in verse 18:1 I love you, O Lord, my strength. Before he celebrated the victories, he celebrated the relationship. Power without intimacy becomes religion. David’s spiritual inclination was a conversation…a talk with God based on his affection for God.

2. God provides whatever protection His people need. Rock. Fortress. Deliverer. Refuge. Shield. Horn of salvation. Stronghold. David stacks these images because one word cannot fully describe God’s faithfulness. Our vocabulary runs out before God’s protection does. Psalms 18:2-3.

3. Desperation often becomes the doorway to revelation. David says in verse 18:4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; Some of the deepest encounters with God happen when human strength collapses. Calamity introduced David to dimensions of God he never would have known in comfort.

4. Muscle may be mighty, but prayer is powerful. Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears. David knew that our needs touch the heart of God and that our prayers reach the ears of God. One prayer can disturb Hell’s plans by the grace of the Almighty.

5. God fights fiercely for His children. God rises against the enemies of His people. This is covenant language. God is not detached from the suffering of His people. He takes attacks on His children personally. Psalm 18:7-18.

6. God rescues you because He loves you and delights in you. Psalm 18:19 He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. David’s rescue was not merely merciful; it was relational. Grace is not God reluctantly tolerating you. It is God delighting in you. God does not just help you survive battles. He transforms battles into testimonies. Psalm 18 reveals something every weary believer needs to hear: if God carried you yesterday, He has not suddenly become weak today.

Reflection: Lord, help me to remember that You are my rock and my fortress against the evil schemes of the world
